Names
Destiny II, Destiny 2, and Eternia
Updated 2026-10-18
I lost an afternoon to a roman numeral. Tales of Destiny II and Tales of Destiny 2 are not the same product, and only one of them is the game this remaster is selling.
Three names
| Name you saw | What it is |
|---|---|
| Tales of Eternia | PS1, Japan, 30 November 2000. Also the PSP name, and the 2026 remaster. |
| Tales of Destiny II | The September 2001 North American PS1 release of Tales of Eternia. Same game, different title. |
| Tales of Destiny 2 | PS2, 2002. The actual sequel to Tales of Destiny. It did not release outside Asia. It is not in the 2026 remaster. |
The rename was a branding choice. Destiny was the only Tales game North America had at the time, and the publisher wanted the sequel-looking title to sit next to it. Wikipedia quotes the developers on that. It was not a trademark collision with the word Eternia. RPG Site's review calls the rename the thing that scrambled the localization history, which matches how this question keeps coming up.
What you should buy in 2026
If you want the Reid and Farah story, you want Tales of Eternia Remastered. Searching 'tales of destiny 2' will not surface a legal current-gen port of the PS2 game. I looked through the PlayStation and Steam catalogs cited in the research pass and did not find a modern Destiny 2 release. 'Tale of Eternia' and 'trails of eternia' are the same hunt with a typo. Trails is a different series.
The remaster follows the PSP version, not the PS1 disc you may have played as Destiny II. That is why local four-player battles are gone. The full change list is on original versus remastered.
