Switch versus Switch 2
Updated 2026-10-18
I kept seeing 'switch 2' and the misspelling 'switchj 2' in the same breath as a normal Switch search. They are two products. I used RPG Site's side-by-side from 14 October 2026 and the publisher spec table, not a guess.
What changes
| Switch | Switch 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Docked / handheld | 1080p / 720p, up to 60fps | 4K / 1080p, up to 60fps |
| Upgrade to the native Switch 2 build? | No upgrade pack; Switch software can still run on Switch 2 | Separate purchase for the native build |
| Saves between native versions | Do not move to the native Switch 2 build | Does not import Switch-build saves |
| Box in EU and Japan | Game on the card | Game-Key Card, then a download |
| North America | Digital only | Digital only |
| Stick diagonals in the 14 October test | Reported snapping | Reported on the native build and the Switch build running on Switch 2 |
Madnani's load times, which I am quoting rather than retesting: title screen about 20–22 seconds on Switch, 11–12 seconds for the Switch build running on Switch 2, and 9–10 seconds on the native Switch 2 build. Loading a save was about 1–2 seconds. He also notes the Switch 2 build can use the mouse for some minigames. The engine is Unity, which is his explanation for the slow Switch cold start.
How I would choose
If you own a Switch 2 and you care about the higher handheld resolution, buy the Switch 2 version. Buying the Switch version to 'save money and play it on Switch 2' gives you the lower-resolution build, a slower boot, and a save you cannot move later. If you only own a Switch, the Switch version is the one that exists for you. Read the stick bug page either way. The D-pad is the workaround until a patch says otherwise.
Packaging details are on the physical edition page. The rest of the hardware list is on platforms.
